What is Dance Connect?

Dance Connect is a fully funded programme helping young people get physically and mentally through 1-2-1 mentoring sessions and dance classes. The project consists of the following:

MENTORING

  • 4 months of 1-2-1 mentoring with one of our team of professional mentors – either virtually or in schools.
  • Each session incorporates journal-based activities such as the Warwick Wellbeing Questionnaire and Confidence Tree as well as assessments of coping skills.
  • Participants are encouraged to use these sessions to express and explore their feelings, work on coping skills, identify and address issues and to build resilience.

DANCE

  • 1 to 3 hours of dance sessions each week online – including a weekly Zoom dance class (Streetz Ahead Term Time Only)
  • Access to our Daily Wake Up programme– a daily 10-minute body and mind workout which incorporates fitness, street dance and wellbeing.
  • Participants are encouraged to use these sessions to express and explore their feelings, work on coping skills, identify and address issues and to build resilience.

Who is Dance Connect for?

Dance Connect is for young people aged 8-18 who have been identified as being at risk of school exclusion, violence, or domestic abuse, as well as young people struggling with mental health issues or with the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown.

How do we apply for / refer someone to Dance Connect?

If any of the above apply to your child or a young person that you know, we’d encourage you to apply with either of the below options:

  1. If you have previously registered with Streetz Ahead, just send your child’s full name to info@streetzahead.org and we will add them to our list!
  2. If you are new to Streetz Ahead, please click the button below to register. Where it asks you “Which group/class would you like to attend”, please put “Dance Connect”.

Why should we apply for Dance Connect?

Through Dance Connect, participants will improve in the following ways:

BEHAVIOUR – Young people’s behaviour in their homes and educational settings will improve.

WELLBEING – Young people’s mental wellbeing and emotional resilience will be improved through identifying and and developing their coping skills.

ENGAGEMENT – Young people’s ability to cooperate with those in authority as well as their own peers will increase.

ATTAINMENT – Young people’s educational and social attainment will be increased.

We ran a pilot scheme from January to March this year with the following statistics to prove its effectiveness:

  • 87% of parents reported that their child’s behaviour has improved
  • 70% of parents reported they see their child behaving in a withdrawn manner less often
  • 66% of parents reported their child displaying less anxious feelings
  • 89% of participants reported that they feel withdrawn less often
  • 75% of parents reported they have seen their child show higher levels of engagement
